Antiques in Roscommon

After the Anglo-Norman invasion Irish Romanesque architecture was replaced by Gothic. The Transitional period from the Romanesque to the Gothic style can be studied in some of the Cistercian abbeys built about a.d. 1200 such as Boyle Abbey, Co. Roscommon (Bed and Breakfasts, Roscommon, Ireland) ; Abbey Knockmoy, Co. Galway; and Corcomroe, Co. Clare. There arc some good Irish examples of thirteenth-century buildings in the so- called Early-English style as also of the later periods ; hut the; Gothic architecture of Ireland is no more slavish copy of English models ; it exhibits peculiarities of great interest, and it seems doubtful if English influence played such a preponderating part in its development as sometimes is thought.
