Town of Roscommon

The county town Roscommon is an important road junction and a good touring centre. It mainly occupies the southern slopes of a gentle hill, and took its name and origin from St. Coman, who founded a monastery here in early Christian times.

Town of Knockcroghery

Knockcroghery was once a place of execution. Galey Castle, built in the 14th century is situated beyond the village and near the shore of Galey Bay. Out in the lake is the island of Inishcleraun which is the site of a monastery founded by St. Diarmait in 540.
